HISTORY OF SIVAKALINI AMMAN

The primary deity of this peedam is Sivakalini Amman. Known as Sitanji Sivakalini, it is associated with the history of Sivakalini Amman. In the past, a wicked demon named Kamakasura resided in that location, embodying all forms of evil. Seeking to enhance his power, Kamakasura performed intense meditation and received a boon from Lord Brahma. This boon stated that he could only be defeated by an unmarried girl. Exploiting this advantage, he began to torment not only Devas, Rishis, Yakshas, and Gandharvas but also humans.

Soon, he gained control over the upper seven realms known as the Lokas. These include:

1. Satya loka or Brahma’s loka, where Lord Brahma and goddess Saraswathi reside.
2. Tapa loka, the dwelling place of Tapasri.
3. Jana loka, the residence of the sons of God Brahma.
4. Mahar loka, where great sages and enlightened beings reside.
5. Svar loka, the abode of Devas, Rishis, Gandharvas, and Apsaras. It is where all the 330 million Hindu gods (Deva) reside.
6. Bhuvar loka (or Pitri Loka), which encompasses the sun, stars, and other planets. It is located between Earth and the sun and is occupied by semi-divine beings.
7. Bhur loka, where humans, plants, and animals live. According to the Vishnu Purana, our Earth is just one of the countless Earth-like worlds found in the universe.

In order to rid themselves of Kamakasura’s evil deeds, everyone gathered in Kailash and prayed to Lord Shiva to vanquish him. Lord Shiva, being aware of Lord Brahma’s boon, intentionally cursed goddess Parvati to be born on Earth for a trivial reason, as part of his divine game (Thiruvilayadal). Goddess Parvati took on the form of an ordinary person on Earth. As she grew older, she realized the purpose of her birth and began meditating on Lord Shiva. She prayed to a linga made of sand or prithivi lingam near a mango tree on the banks of the Palar River, which is located near the Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram.

Ludicrous Demon saw loka matha with lust and proposed her to marry him with evil intention; she refused to marry him and warned him. Lunatic kamakasura got anger on hearing Sakthi’s word and disturbed her again and again. His idiotic deeds make her angry and it leads to war between Kamakasura and goddess sakthi at Sitanji. At the end of war, Goddess sakthi killed Kamakasura and drank his blood fiercely at sitanji. That anger form of Sakthi is known as Bhadrakali amman. Lord Shiva appeared and married goddess sakthi and both of them bless us all in the form of Sivakalini amman at Sitanji forever.

Everyone desires to rid themselves of Kamakasura’s evil deeds, so they gathered in Kailash and prayed to Lord Shiva to eliminate Kamakasura. Lord Shiva, being aware of Lord Brahma’s boon, intentionally cursed goddess Parvati to be born on earth for a trivial reason (as part of his Thiruvilayadal). Goddess Parvati took on a human form on earth and, upon reaching adulthood, understood the purpose of her birth. She began meditating on Lord Shiva by worshipping a linga made of sand or prithivi lingam near the mango tree on the banks of the Palar River, close to the Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram.

The absurd demon, Kamakasura, lusted after the divine mother and proposed marriage with evil intentions. She rejected his proposal and warned him. Kamakasura, in his madness, became enraged upon hearing Sakthi’s words and repeatedly disturbed her. His foolish actions angered her, leading to a battle between Kamakasura and goddess Sakthi at Sitanji. In the end, goddess Sakthi slew Kamakasura and consumed his blood ferociously at Sitanji. This fierce form of Sakthi is known as Bhadrakali Amman. Lord Shiva then appeared, married goddess Sakthi, and together they bestow blessings upon us in the form of Sivakalini Amman at Sitanji for eternity.

The aforementioned history is detailed in the verses of the ancient book Sri Magasandi Magayoga Vithanam (page no: 274).

In 1999, Amma established the Sivakalini Sithar Peedam as per the instructions received from Bhadrakali Amman during her divine vision.
